     Durante a Guerra Civil (1828 – 1834) em Portugal, Recarei foi um local de grande importância para as operações do memorável e longo Cerco do Porto que começou em Julho de 1832 e terminou em Agosto do ano seguinte. A excelente posição geográfica de Recarei, tornava-a num ponto estratégico fulcral nas acções de guerrilha e ataque ao centro populacional de maior importância naquela região – a cidade do Porto. Depois da vitória de D. Pedro IV, muitos concelhos que apoiaram as forças miguelistas, foram imediatamente destituídos. Aguiar de Sousa fora um desses concelhos, deixando a freguesia da Sobreira pertencente à relação do Porto. Entretanto, o Doutor José Guilherme fez com que Paredes fosse elegido a concelho, ao qual se juntaria a freguesia de Recarei, após a desanexação da de Sobreira, no ano de 1856.

     A freguesia de Recarei, hoje com cerca de 4600 habitantes (segundo os censos de 2011), foi evoluindo ao sabor dos tempos e concentra actualmente os requisitos necessários que lhe permitiram alcançar o estatuto de vila. Para que a elevação de Recarei a vila fosse possível, foi apresentado um Projecto de Lei com o nº 32/IX, onde foram tidos em conta como condições para a elevação da mesma vários factores de índole históricos, económicos, sociais e culturais.
